Actors or performers who stood in the path of the limelight would be illuminated brightly, drawing the audience's focus to them. Therefore, being "in the limelight" referred to being in a prominent position on stage, where all eyes were on the performer. Over time, the phrase evolved beyond its theatrical origins to describe anyone or anything that is the focus of widespread attention.
