Before there was Bram Stoker’s Dracula, (and Castlevania’s villainess by the same name), there was “Carmilla,” an 1872 Gothic novella by Irish author Sheridan Le Fanu that was arguably the earliest work of vampire fiction, steeped in sexual tension and gothic romance. In an isolated castle deep in the Styrian forest, Laura leads a solitary life with only her elderly father for company - until one moonlit night, a horse-drawn carriage crashes into view, carrying an unexpected guest: the beautiful Carmilla.
